The facility would include a concert hall, separate practice space for music, theater and dance students and new equipment. Fund-raising for the program is scheduled to begin this spring. The project will be funded through private donations and will be part of a larger capital campaign to raise money for the university, according to professor Jackie Wiggins, chairwoman of the school's department of music, theatre and dance.
The university's existing facilities date back to the 1970s, Wiggins says, adding the existing 400-seat theater is too small to host large-scale musical productions. OU often uses Clarkston High School's auditorium for major performances, because of its larger seated capacity.
The university has about 600 students in the music, theater and dance programs, an increase of about 500 over the past 10 years.
