The company has been operating in Rogers Park since 1949, expanding over the years to a series of buildings along a four-block stretch from Devon and Pratt avenues, with the Union Pacific railroad tracks to the east. Residential uses, ranging from single-family homes to multifamily buildings, are on the other three sides.

Besides its headquarters, the Rogers Park site also is home to S&C Electric's research and development, engineering and manufacturing operations. The company has smaller facilities in Alameda, CA and Franklin, WI, as well as Toronto, Brazil, China and Mexico.

"I think this is an example of TIFs keeping good-paying jobs in the community and creating new ones," says 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore, who shares the S&C Electric Co. complex with 50th Ward Alderman Bernard Stone. "S&C has been a model corporate citizen."

Previously, community development commission members were told S&C employees average $50,000 a year. The company also pays $1.2 million a year in property taxes.

The seven-phase project includes more than redevelopment and construction costs, however. The company also expects to spend money on equipment upgrades as well as employee training.
