$138M S&C Electric Retooling To Get TIF Help

CHICAGO-The city will give the maker of electric power systems systems up to $39.7 million to help offset the costs of redeveloping the 1.1 million sf of buildings on its 46 acres in Rogers Park, as well as upgrading equipment and training some of its 1,500 employees.

CHICAGO-S&C Electric Co. will redevelop its 1.1-million-sf complex on 46 acres on Ridge Avenue over the next four years at a cost of $138 million. Hoping to keep 1,500 jobs in the city, the community development commission has endorsed giving the company, which makes equipment for electric power systems, nearly $40 million in tax increment financing.

The company has been operating in Rogers Park since 1949, expanding over the years to a series of buildings along a four-block stretch from Devon and Pratt avenues, with the Union Pacific railroad tracks to the east. Residential uses, ranging from single-family homes to multifamily buildings, are on the other three sides.

Besides its headquarters, the Rogers Park site also is home to S&C Electric’s research and development, engineering and manufacturing operations. The company has smaller facilities in Alameda, CA and Franklin, WI, as well as Toronto, Brazil, China and Mexico.
