CANTON TOWNSHIP, MI-Plans for an IKEA furniture store are back on in Metropolitan Detroit. The Swedish furniture retailer says it has bought out a property owner near its planned store in this township, which will allow plans for the store to move forward.
"We remain excited, committed and looking forward to opening IKEA Canton in summer 2006," IKEA spokesman Joseph Roth says. How much the neighboring property owner was going to charge IKEA to allow the property to be used for parking was a stumbling block that had caused IKEA to announce several weeks ago that it was pulling out of the deal.
That property owner, LBS Partners, says it did not want to halt the planned development. "It was never our intention to sell this property," says Daniel Stern, a West Bloomfield developer who is a partner in LBS. "However, it became clear that selling the property was the only way to allow the Ikea development to proceed."
The store will be built at the corner of Ford and Haggerty roads. IKEA plans a store of about 300,000 sf in two stories that will feature a 300-seat restaurant, 1,100 parking spaces and a supervised children's play area.
IKEA has spent the past several years considering sites in the Detroit area for one of its super-sized retail outlets. Two years ago, it was rejected for a planned location in Troy when city planners there objected to IKEA's bold blue and yellow exterior color scheme.
