Hospital Backers Line Up With Proposals

MAPLE GROVE, MN-The approval should intensify a three-way competition to build the new hospital. Proposals vary in cost from a $72 million to nearly $300 million.

MAPLE GROVE, MN-Health officials with the State of Minnesota have concluded that this city on the western edge of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, needs a new hospital–a decision that will intensify competition among three healthcare companies who want to be the ones to build it. Proposals to build a hospital in the fast-growing area have renewed concerns about the costs and benefits of expanding expensive health care facilities in the state.

The facilities described in the competing proposals carry construction price tags ranging starting at $72 million and going up to $299 million in the final phase. The proposals are from Fairview Health Services, North Memorial Health Care and a group called the Maple Grove Tri-Care Partnership, which consists of Allina Hospitals & Clinics, Park Nicollet Health Services and Children’s Hospitals and Clinics.

The Maple Grove Tri-Care Partnership proposes to build a $72-million, 60- to 100-bed hospital near the Interstate Highway 94 corridor at 97th Avenue and Dunkirk Lane. The group says it could develop a hospital of up to 250 beds eventually on the 84-acre site, which includes 34 acres of wetlands that would remain undeveloped.
