Last year, Faurecia opened an automotive seating factory on Sims Drive in that employs about 100 people. The new facility, to be located near 14 Mile and Van Dyke, would employ 448 people and manufacture automotive interior systems, says Lil Adams, executive director of the Sterling Heights Area Chamber of Commerce.

"The important thing about this is these are new jobs, not just moving a plant from one community to the next," she says. "There was a time when 400 manufacturing jobs was not that big of a deal, but nowadays, it is something we have to work at."

The state's Michigan Economic Development Corp. says the city of Sterling Heights is considering a local tax abatement valued at approximately $4.2 million over 12 years to support the project. The MEDC provided Faurecia with a $6.3-million single business tax credit to support the project. Faurecia had been considering an alternate site in Ohio for the project, the state claims.

Adams says Faurecia plans to locate where a rock crushing company, TJ Fiore, is now located, prompting a move by Fiore. She adds Faurecia hopes to be operational at the site by October.
