SAN DIEGO-Gafcon, a leading construction management and consulting firm, has named industry vet Dennis Walters as the company’s director of operations. In his new position, Walters is responsible for directing overall company operations, including project management. He brings more than 25 years in the construction industry. Most recently Walters was vice president with the local office of Douglas E. Barnhart Inc.Prior to that position, Walters spent 15 years with Nielsen Dillingham Builders Inc. as director of project management and later as vice president of operations, risk management and labor relations. Founded in 1987 by Pam and Yehudi Gaffen, Gafcon employs more than 95 construction project managers, architects, civil engineers, financial analysts, estimators, schedulers, quality inspectors and computer professionals. Gafcon maintains corporate headquarters at 701 ‘B’ Street in San Diego and counts branch offices in Orange County and Los Angeles. One of the firm’s major projects is Allegro Towers, a 240,000-sf, 28-story, 201-unit apartment/mixed-use structure located in Little Italy. The property includes a five-story level and a seven-story level parking structure surrounding the tower as well as underground parking for approximately 265 vehicles. Besides the residential space, the property includes 9,000 sf of commercial space.Another major project is Gafcon’s contract with the Los Angeles Unified School District to handle school construction management for an estimated $2-billion program. The contract runs through 2007 and in the timeframe of the agreement, Gafcon will serve as part of a joint venture team headed up by CCG and Harris & Associates, two construction management companies based in Los Angeles. In this capacity, Gafcon will be responsible for overseeing the construction of new facilities on a case-by-case basis for the school district.
