The proposed expansion would add about 60,000 sf to the northwest side of the Palace, which is the home of the Detroit Pistons of the NBA and Detroit Shock of the WNBA. The projected cost is $15 million.
"It is conceivable council will approve this plan. It has been recommended by the planning commission," city manager Scott Randall says. "The people at the Palace are anxious to start work on it this summer and hope to have a portion of it completed this year."
Documents filed with the city say the project would include a club restaurant that would seat about 600 people and eight below-ground level luxury suites that could accommodate up to 50 people each. The Palace, which opened in 1988, seats 22,000 people and has 180 private suites.
