BOSTON-Barneys New York, a wholly owned subsidiary of Jones Apparel Group Inc., will establish a new flagship store, taking 46,000 sf of space at the Copley Place Mall. The opening of the store will mark the fourth flagship for the luxury retailer, which has similar operations in New York, Chicago and Beverly Hills. Barneys has had a 6,200-sf retail outlet in the Chestnut Hill Mall in Newton, MA, since 1989. Simon Properties has extended the lease on that location, but terms of the agreements were not disclosed for either lease.

"The Boston flagship signifies our belief in the considerable untapped potential of the Barneys New York brand, and represents a significant step towards the realization of the growth strategy for that brand," says Peter Boneparth, president and CEO of Jones Apparel Group, in a statement. Barneys was acquired last year by New York City-based Jones Apparel Co. for $400 million. In addition to the Co-Ops, Barneys operates six department stores and 11 outlet units.

Owned by the Simon Property Group Inc. REIT, Copley Place Mall is a 367,000-sf shopping center. Located in Back Bay on a 9.5-acre site, the two-level center is home to more than 100 stores and restaurants, including Tiffany & Co., Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Neiman Marcus, and Legal Seafood. Copley Place is one of the nation's most productive malls, according to a Simonwith sales per sf of $800. The mall is part of a mixed-use complex that consists of four 7-story office buildings totaling about 880,000-sf, two hotels and 1,400 parking spaces.

Last month, the retailer announced that the Washington, DC area will get its first Barneys New York Co-Op store in the fall, making it the first unit for the high-end retailer in this metro market. The store is going into the Collection at Chevy Chase, a 112,000-sf, two-level group of luxury stores set to open in October.

So far this year, Barneys has opened three new Co-Ops, one each in Atlanta, Chicago and Costa Mesa, CA. The retailer currently operates seven of the units, which are smaller than its Barneys New York flagship department stores. At 11,400 sf, the Chevy Chase unit with be the largest Barneys Co-Op.
