CANTON TOWNSHIP, MI-Furniture retailer IKEA has received the final governmental approvals it needs to build a 311,000-sf store in this Detroit suburb. The store will be IKEA's first in Michigan.

IKEA hopes to begin construction in June, with a grand opening in summer 2006. The future IKEA Canton will be the 28th IKEA store inthe US, and fourth in the Upper Midwest, joining stores in Schaumburg, IL; Bloomington, MN; and in Bolingbrook, IL.

"We are thrilled and honored by the support of Canton officials and Gov. (Jennifer) Granholm in favor of opening a Michigan store," says Pat Merwin, IKEA real estate manager. "We knew Michiganders were fans of IKEA, but the interest since we announced our plans, plus these township approvals, have made us feel most welcome. We cannot wait until next summer."

The store, which will employ about 300 people, will be built at the intersection of Ford and Haggerty Roads. IKEA says it has the land under contract and, eventually, can begin demolition on the empty Super Kmart store currently at the site.
