GlobeSt. UPDATE: $70M Walker Expansion Makes Its Debut

MINNEAPOLIS-The $70-million expansion to the Walker Art Center, which has attracted national attention for its bold design, opened its doors to the public Sunday, attracting more than 8,000 people for the first public showing.

MINNEAPOLIS-Herzog & de Meuron of Basel, Switzerland, designed the new 130,000-sf addition, which was open to the public for the first time on Sunday. The building features a single level covered with glass topped by six stories of embossed aluminum mesh panels that reflect their surroundings. The cutting-edge architecture of the Walker , which was first reported in 2002, has attracted national attention.

The project doubles the size of the art center, adding 10,000 sf of new gallery space, a library of contemporary art, interactive educational lounges, a 385-seat theater and a refurbished cinema. The project also includes street-level and rooftop terraces and plazas and lounges for both small and large groups; 20.21, a fine-dining restaurant; and Gallery 8 Cafi, operated by renowned chef Wolfgang Puck.
