The three-story facility at 6820 Wedgwood Rd. North will house the nearly 600 employees who handle underwriting, policy administration and processing, human resources, legal, information technology, as well as sales and marketing for Hartford's Middle America business.

Construction of the new facility, which includes a three-story glass-fronted atrium and two wings of office space, began in April 2004. Minneapolis-based Ryan Cos. oversaw the development and construction of the new facility, while Walsh Bishop of Minneapolis was the architect for the building. The company declines to disclose how much they paid for the building, says Dave Potter, of Hartford Life.

Employees moved to the new facility from Hartford's offices in Plymouth, which will continue to house employees who support some information technology and project management functions.

"We decided to open our new Maple Grove facility to accommodate the continued growth of Hartford's individual life insurance business," says Tom Marra, Hartford Life's president and chief operating officer. He adds his company chose Maple Grove because of its availability of a skilled and educated workforce and a "business-friendly" environment.

Hartford, through its issuing companies, is the top seller of variable universal life insurance in the US, according to the 2004 Tillinghast-Towers Perrin Value Survey.

In 2004, the Hartford, CT-based insurance company posted $22.7 billion in revenues from investment products, life insurance, and insurance related to automobile, homes and business property.
