The property, dubbed Heritage Village, will become a mixed-use planned development with a neighborhood shopping center anchored by a previously announced Meijer store, approximately 1,100 housing units, and more than 100 acres of open space for community recreation.
"This project demonstrates the benefit of economic development in a community of great importance to GM," says Matt Cullen, GM's general manager of economic development and enterprise services. "We are beginning to transform this undeveloped property into a mixed-used development that will greatly enhance the community and directly benefit its residents."
The Warren City Council voted 5-4 in January to rezone the property from industrial to "planned unit development" and also approved a development agreement with Grand Sakwa and General Motors. GM spokesman John MacDonald said the sale closed on Monday.
"We are very excited about the opportunity to develop this parcel into a residential, commercial and recreational $400 million showplace," said Gary Sakwa of Grand Sakwa Properties, LLC. "We are moving very quickly to get construction underway and have begun the site preparation work." The development is anticipated to take three to five years to complete. GM also was at the center of another recent major construction project in Warren. In 2004, it concluded construction of its Vehicle Engineering Center at the Warren Technical Center, part of a $1 billion expansion and enhancement effort at that 50-year-old complex.
"Today signals the start of the most significant development in Warren in decades," says Warren Mayor Mark Steenbergh.
