Former Academy Sports Exec Joins NewQuest

HOUSTON-Jim Pierce, former chief operating officer of locally based Academy Sports & Outdoors, takes on a new role at NewQuest Properties. He will be responsible for new development including landacquisition and site selection.

HOUSTON-The former chief operating officer of locally based Academy Sports & Outdoors, Jim Pierce, has joined NewQuest Properties as a development partner. In his new role, Pierce will be involved in landacquisition for single- and multi-tenant development sites, as well as site planning, design and development.During Pierce’s 12-year tenure at Academy Sports he served also served as executive vice president and CFO. He was involved in expanding the company from 27 stores in two states to 81 stores in nine states. Total revenues increased from $187 million to $1.2billion while realizing a 17% compounded annual growth rate in earnings. Pierce has a long-standing relationship with NewQuest, having worked with the firm for many years during his stint at Academy Sports. He says that his perspective and experience as a retailer is a good fit with NewQuest, which is an active developer in Texas and owns or manages a portfolio of more than 100 properties, including nearly 75 retail centers. Pierce started his career in banking. From 1982 to 1987, he served as vice president of Cullen Frost Bank’s local office, and from 1987 to 1993, Pierce was vice president and division manager of the Houstonoffice of Chemical Bank of New York.
