DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI-A Dearborn Heights nurseryand garden chain is moving into a space that once housed a formercompetitor's retail store in Ann Arbor.English Gardens' new store on the corner of Maple Roadand Jackson at the Maple Village Shopping Center inAnn Arbor marks the second time Gardens hasfilled a vacant Frank's Nursery & Crafts store.

In Ann Arbor, the store location features a nearly20,000-sf building and a 23,000-sf nursery lot witha covered shopping area. English Gardens plans toemploy 30 people at the new store. "This store provides a great opportunity to grow ourcompany and enter a new marketplace," says John P.Darin, president of English Gardens.

Like much of the products it sells, English Garden hasbeen on the grow of late. The 51-year-old,family-owned company currently operates five stores inMetro Detroit: Clinton Township, Dearborn Heights,Eastpointe, Royal Oak and West Bloomfield. English Gardens just completed a renovation at itsClinton Township store, doubling interior sellingspace with the addition of a 20,000-sf greenhouse. This is the second Frank's Nursery store the companyhas renovated. In 1996, English Gardens opened itsfourth store in Eastpointe, the site of a formerFrank's Nursery.

Frank's declared bankruptcy last fall and ceased retailoperations at the end of 2004. Troy-based Frank's isnow waiting on final approval from a bankruptcy judgeto redevelop and lease or sell its remaining 42 retaillocations around the country.
