DETROIT-Farmer Jack supermarkets confirmed Thursday that nine of its 10 Food Basics stores in the metro region are closing. Two Farmer Jack stores are also closing.

Parent company Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. Inc. (A&P) said three Food Basics stores in Detroit and one each in Harper Woods, Highland Park, Lincoln Park,Melvindale, Sterling Heights and Wayne would be closing by the end of July. In addition, the New Jersey-based supermarket chain said it would close three Food Basics stores in the Toledo, OH area, and close one Farmer Jack store in each Southfield and Waterford. A Dearborn Heights Food Basics store will remain open.

The closings will leave A&P with 86 Farmer Jack stores in Michigan and Ohio. The chain, which owns 650 grocery stores in North America, would not comment on whether it was trying to sell any of the stores slated for closing. A&P also would not comment on speculation that it may be trying to sell the entire Farmer Jack chain.

The 10 Food Basics stores were opened about a year ago by Farmer Jack in former Farmer Jack locations. The converted stores are self-serve, offering produce, dairy, packaged meat, seafood and frozen goods. To cut down on cost, shoppers are asked to bring their own grocery bags or buy them, yet the low-cost, low-frills approach was not enough to woo enough shoppers.
