OCEANSIDE, CA-A major project that’s been in the works for years, has cleared another hurdle, with the Oceanside City Council voting unanimously to approve the development of a Westin Hotel in the Downtown area. The project, a partnership between S.D. Malkin Properties and Interstate Hotels and Resorts, calls for a 302-room hotel with 72 timeshare units. It’s set for a two-block area across from the historic Oceanside Pier. The project also calls for a spa, two restaurants, a bar and “significant meeting space area,” according to an executive with S. D. Malkin.Jeremy Cohen, senior vice president of S. D. Malkin Properties, the project’s managing partner, tells Globest.com that the “resort will ultimately anchor a nine-block area that’s residential, retail, hotel and timeshare space,” he says. “It’s at the very center of the redevelopment area.”According to Cohen, the site went through the approval process several years back–at that time the plan was for a 450-room Hyatt. That project took over the beachfront and adjoining streets and was rejected by the Coastal Commission. “This is a scaled-back version,” Cohen says.In the new version, the project will include 25,000 sf of meeting space and a 7,200-sf ballroom. The development will go up on what is currently a parking lot and a historic home. Cohen says the future of the historic home is under discussion, with it either being incorporated into the project or being moved and preserved on another site.S. D. Malkin will serve as the development partner and give vision to the site, while Interstate will run the resort on a day-to-day basis once the development is in place. S. D. Malkin selected SB Architects of San Francisco to design the project. Construction is projected to begin in 2007, and the resort is expected to open in 2009.
