The project calls for a private development company, Mexicantown Commercial Properties, to redevelop a vacant, partially tax-reverted property into a new visitor center for the state and a connected retail center that will feature goods and restaurants in keeping with Mexicantown's heritage.

Located about 500 feet from the US-Canadian border, the Mexicantown International Welcome Center will have a projected 1.8 million visitors a year upon completion. State and local tax capture valued at more than $1.3 million will help prepare the property for development.

Located next to the Welcome Center, in a separate building, will be Mercado, the retail center. The total cost of the two-building development is pegged at $14 million. Construction is hoped to begin in June, according to the Mexicantown CommunityDevelopment Corp. A completion date has not yet been set.
