UCSD Campus Adds $30M Building

LA JOLLA, CA-McCarthy Building Company is constructing an 110,000-sf student services building for UCSD and has a hand in a host of other projects around campus.

LA JOLLA, CA-A $30 million, 110,000-sf student academic building has broken ground on UCSDs campus, marking one of many recent projects happening at the university. The new Student Academic Services Building is under construction by McCarthy Building Companies Inc.UCSD Senior Architect Pnina Goldberg is overseeing the construction of the five-story parcel which was designed by San Diego architect Rob Wellington Quigley. The building, located at 9500 Gilman Dr. in La Jolla, will consist of a concrete and structural steel hybrid frame with curtain wall exteriors and ornate finishes. In addition to housing the UCSD academic services facility, the project will have an auditorium and café. A 3,200-sf space on the second floor and a 1,200-sf space on the first floor will be dedicated to food services, though the university has not yet chosen a tenant for either space, project manager for the Student Academic Services Facility, Ross Malik tells Globest.com. The university will conglomerate a number of different services into the new building, set to reach completion in March 2007. “There are a number of buildings on campus that serve the purpose of what the Student Academic Services Facility will do in a single location. When the building is complete, the other spaces will be converted to serve other applicable uses, of which none have been designated at this time,” Malik says. Other McCarthy projects on campus include the renovation of the UCSD Biomedical Library, the recent completion of the Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center and the UCSD construction of the $45 million Leichtag Family Foundation Biomedical Research Building, completed last June.
