The space will serve as interim space until a major 152,000 sf expansion project on its divisional campus is completed in late September. "Their need is very great--they are showing solid growth," says Art Brown, a commercial real estate broker with Prudential Metrowide Commercial, who represented the company in the deal.
The building, which is located at 8401 Jefferson Highway North not far from Boston Scientific's main Maple Grove campus, is owned by GSI Lumonics. Todd Mongrain of Colliers Turley Martin Tucker of Minneapolis represented the owners in the deal. The lease includes an option to buy and will run three years, Brown says. "We will re-evaluate our space needs then," Murphy says.
Long a major player in the Twin Cities' medical technology industry, Boston Scientific's growth has taken off since its Maple Grove division developed the Taxus drug-coated stent. A stent is a device that acts as a scaffold to provide support inside the coronary artery.
Taxus is the overall industry's top-selling product, and the company expects it to hit $2.7 billion in sales this year. The company's stent division employs some 3,600 people in Maple Grove and Plymouth, including 3,100 direct employees and about 500 contract workers. The division is the source for well-paying jobs both in research and in manufacturing, and the company has added about 400 employees here in the last year.
