Other phases of the project will eventually include more than 50,000 sf of retail space in a neighborhood center and 125 condominiums. The corner has been vacant since early last year. Originally, one of the Detroit area's first multiplexes, the 31-year-old Showcase Cinema, had been located on the corner. The cinema has since moved a few miles from the property and boasts 30 screens, up from 10 in the early '80s.
The property is being developed by Market Place Properties, owned by Gary Roncelli and Guy Rizzo, both longtime developers in and around Macomb County. In fact, the same developers constructed the original five-screen Showcase Cinema that opened on that same corner in 1974.
The MJR, the new cinema will be its sixth, all of which are in the greater Detroit region. When the Sterling Heights project is completed, the company will have a total of 102 screens.
