But if the hearing earlier this week is any indication, the sale--which would be the site for the $65-million, 820,000-sf first phase of the Fridley-based medical device firm's expansion--is no done deal.

At the end of an extended hearing on the sale, the council just barely defeated a motion to put the land up for bids by Mayor Rob Marty. The vote was 3-2. The proposal was in response to objections that the selling price of the golf course--$8.65 million--is too low and that tax benefits wouldn't be realized for decades.

There also are plans for a later phase could add 680,000 sf to house Medtronic's cardiac rhythm management division, which makes pacemakers and implantable heart defibrillators.
