TOWSON, MD-Continuing-care retirement community Edenwald--located at 800 Southerly Rd. off the Baltimore Beltway, and between the one-million-sf Towson Town Center and Goucher College--will increase in size with the addition of a new 12-story apartment structure, to be called the Terraces at Edenwald. Edenwald officials expect the endeavor to cost approximately $60 million to complete.

The Terraces will add 54 new apartments to the community, as well as 32 assisted-living suites, a fitness center and an indoor pool and spa. Additionally, the project will offer a four-level parking facility, as well as a new chapel.

Statistics on aging support Edenwald's forward-looking plan to accommodate a growing elderly population. The US Department of Health and Human Services' Administration on Aging reports in a recently updated document on the subject that those over age 65 represent 12.3% of the US population, about one in every eight Americans. By 2030, there will be about 71.5 million older persons, more than twice their number in 2000. Edenwald officials plan to begin construction next spring and have wrap up development in 2008.
