City Scraps Plans for Train Depot

DETROIT-The Michigan Central Depot building, reduced to ruin by age and vandalism, is no longer being considered for use as Detroit Police headquarters. City leaders now say they favor creating a regional justice facility elsewhere.

DETROIT-Another plan for Detroit’s 17-story mammoth old train depot has come and gone, without anything changing at the building. City officials say they are dropping a plan first announced by Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick more than a year ago to convert the 92-year-old building into a police headquarters complex.

City leaders now say they favor creating a regional justice facility elsewhere. They say such a facility would be led by Wayne County and would accommodate several police and related agencies from various Wayne County communities. Deputy Mayor Anthony Adams, who talked about the now-shelved depot plans with reporters, did not disclose possible locations for such a facility, or a likely timeline.
