EDEN PRAIRIE, MN-Supervalu was the largest bidder for Winn-Dixie stores, the Jacksonville, FL-based food retailer disclosed in bankruptcy court late last week. The Eden Prairie-based food retailer and wholesaler bid $9.5 million for 37 stores of the 79 stores Winn-Dixie had deals to sell.

The Supervalu purchases include 28 (mostly SaveRite stores) in Georgia, eight (mostly Winn-Dixie stores) in Mississippi and one in Alabama. Among the retail brands that Supervalu operates includes Cub, Shop 'n Save and Save-A-Lot stores.

On June 21, Winn-Dixie reported that it was trying to perform stronger and improve its prospects for long-term profitability by focusing on its strongest markets and reducing the size of its store base from 913 stores in the US and the Bahamas to 587 stores.

Winn-Dixie is focusing its footprint more to the Southeast states, exiting North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and portions of Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. With annual revenues of about $20 billion, Supervalu has more than 1,500 retail grocery locations in the US.
