PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, MI-A German auto parts manufacturer has opened a 145,000-sf, $15-million production facility in this Wayne County suburb. Karmann USA will use the plant to build convertible roof structures for automobiles. The first project that will come out of the plant is the retractable hardtop for the Pontiac G6 convertible, due to hit showrooms next year.
The township facility, at 14988 Pilot Dr., is the first production facility in the US for Karmann. It is located next to the company's North American technical center.
The company said the plant's proximity to area General Motors and DaimlerChrysler plants and a $2.9-million tax credit from the state prompted it to choose the Plymouth Township location. Karmann USA is a part of German-based Karmann Group.
