If they had not passed the budget by midnight Wednesday, the state faced the prospect of another shutdown like the one that idled 9,000 state workers for a little more than a week earlier this month.

After a 51-day special session, the legislators adjourned without taking on some issues key to developers--a ballpark proposed by the Minnesota Twins, a football stadium for the University of Minnesota and a new hospital in Maple Grove.

Although they are not scheduled to return to the Capitol until March 1, 2006, Gov. Tim Pawlenty had indicated that he would consider calling lawmakers back for a second special session this fall. That session would likely deal with issues related to transportation, pensions, a constitutional amendment to provide more funding for conservation, as well as the stadium and hospital issues.
