PORTLAND-The University of Portland has tied up 35 acres of industrial riverfront adjacent to its 115-campus here for restoration and future expansion. The landowner is Triangle Park LLC. Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. In addition to creating room for additional university facilities, the president of the Catholic University Rev. E. William Beauchamp says plans for the property include natural resource restoration, a new greenway and public trail, and ongoing stewardship of the natural resources through the university’s environmental science program. Indeed, Beauchamp wants the property to be “a living laboratory in science, healing, engineering, urban design, and civic responsibility.”Under the terms of the agreement, the University is permitted to investigate the property for a period of time and, if its conditions are met, the sale will be completed at a later date, says Ted Winnowski, chair of the University’s Board of Regents. The University says the next step is to initiate a planning process with the City of Portland, the Department of Environmental Quality, the Environmental Protection Agency and neighborhood leaders to discuss short- and long-term development plans for the property. The 104-year-old University of Portland is closely affiliated with the Congregation of Holy Cross, Notre Dame, Indiana. It is the only school in Oregon to offer a College of Arts & Sciences, a Graduate School, and schools of Business, Education, Engineering, and Nursing.
