The new terminal will handle air travel at the airport for airlines other than Northwest Airlines. Northwest handles about 75% of the airport's passenger traffic and operates from the McNamara Terminal, which opened in February 2002.
Airlines other than Northwest at the airport now use the Smith Terminal, which handles about 6 million passengers a year. The Smith Terminal will be vacated after the North Terminal is completed. The Smith Terminal opened in 1957.
