ROMULUS, MI-A new two-story airport terminal with 26 gates and 50,000 sf of retail space is planned to open in 2008 at Detroit Metro Airport. Gensler Architecture, Design & Planning says the new North Terminal at the airport will be built on the site of the closed Davey Terminal and will cost about $400 million. The Wayne County Airport Authority has approved the plan, though an exact construction start date has not yet been set.
The new terminal will handle air travel for airlines other than Northwest Airlines. Northwest handles about 75% of the airport's passenger traffic and operates from the McNamara Terminal, which opened in February 2002.
Airlines other than Northwest at the airport now use the Smith Terminal, which handles about six million passengers a year. The Smith Terminal will be vacated after the North Terminal is completed. The Smith Terminal opened in 1957.
