DURHAM, NC-Motricity, a growing locally based provider of content for cellular phones and PDAs, has signed on to move its headquarters from Meridian Parkway to the American Tobacco Historic District, a former Downtown industrial complex that is being redeveloped by its owner, Capital Broadcasting Corp. Motricity will occupy 70,000 sf in sf in the historic Hill Warehouse, which will undergo renovations beginning next month as part of the second phase of the revitalization project. The move is slated to occur this time next year. The first phase of the redevelopment turned over one million square feet of space into restaurants, residences and class A offices, all situated beside the Durham Bulls Triple A baseball park. It is the largest historic renovation project in the history of North Carolina and one of the largest in the country in the last 20 years. A source at Motricity tells GlobeSt.com that the company will lease its space in the Hill Building and has options to lease additional space as it continues to grow. The five-year-old company, which doubled its employee based to 200 over the past year, is hiring at a rate of about one employee every other day. Motricity flows content such as ringtones, games and e-books to carriers such as AT&T who then pass it on to their customers. Other companies that have recently made the move to the complex include McKinney & Silver, GlaxoSmithKline and Duke Corporate Education. Advantis/GVA brokered the Motricity deal. The Romanesque Revival-style Hill Warehouse was named for Percival Hill, the president of the American Tobacco Company at the turn of the century. It was completed in 1901.
