DETROIT-The group working to redevelop the Detroit Riverfront will get $32 million in federal funds to boost their efforts. US Sen. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, both Michigan Democrats, inserted the funds into the recently approved Transportation Equity Act, known as TEA-21. The transportation-spending package includes $29 million for the West Riverfront greenways and $3 million for the East Riverfront, to be used by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.

The Conservancy has been working for two and a half years to redevelop and revitalize the riverfront in the three-mile stretch from the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit to Windsor, Ontario, Canada, to the MacArthur Bridge, which connects the mainland toBelle Isle.

"This bill and funding recognizes what I believe is one of the most significant developments in our city's history--the revitalization of the Detroit International Riverfront," says Faye Alexander Nelson, president & CEO, Detroit RiverFront Conservancy.

The East Riverfront is in the final design stage, and the West Riverfront is the second phase of the Conservancy's goal of a linked Riverfront from bridge to bridge--and beyond. Half of the East RiverWalk project is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2005 and the entire east walkway open by the end of 2007.

In addition to the federal funding, the Conservancy says it has secured more than $80 million in commitments that will go towards funding the creation of the East Riverfront RiverWalk, as well as an endowment to operate it and the green spaces along the riverfront into perpetuity.
