COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, MI-Schonscheck Inc. has been hired to erect a 104,000-sf office building on land it recently sold to J&B Medical Supply. Construction on the family-owned medical supply company's headquarters and distribution center began in late July, following a year and a half of negotiations, says Mark Schafer, director of project development for Schonsheck, a Wixom-based design, construction and land development company. Completion of the building at 50496 W. Pontiac Trail is slated for March.
Fawzi and Mary Shaya, principals of J&B, purchased seven of 13 available acres on Pontiac Trail from Harmon Highway Co.--a development company controlled by Schonsheck--for an undisclosed price. Michael Hart and John Lominack of Colliers International represented the Shayas. "If we control the project, we build the project," says Schonsheck president Mike Gagnon of the agreement that tied the sale of the land to Schonsheck, the company that is also doing the construction work.
The new headquarters will boast 14,000 sf of office space. The remaining square footage will be devoted to warehousing and distribution, Gagnon says. J&B is currently housed in two buildings in Commerce Township.
Formed in 1994, the privately held company began as a small operation taking up 400 sf of space. It previously provided medical supplies for hospitals, physician offices and other uses but now has a contract with the State of Michigan to provide incontinent supplies to adults and children on Medicaid and Medicare. It distributes the products throughout Michigan and 42 other states. Steve Shaya, the son of the principals, said the family hopes to take the business nationwide.
