Rothwell, currently executive director of worldwide real estate for General Motors, will replace Paul Hillegonds who had served as Detroit Renaissance president since 1997. Hillegonds recently left the organization to become senior vice president of corporate affairs of DTE Energy.
Rothwell has been with General Motors since Jan. 1, 2003 where he oversees 350 million sf of real estate in more than 50 countries. Prior to joining GM, Rothwell served as president and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corp., the state's economic development organization.
"The economic revitalization of Detroit and the future growth of the region is important to a healthy Michigan," said Detroit Renaissance executive committee chairman, Richard Wagoner, who is also chairman and CEO at GM. "Doug Rothwell will be missed at General Motors, but his experience and proven track record in the areas of government, public policy and economic development make him the right person to lead Detroit Renaissance, and he will serve this region well."
"Rothwell's extensive background in economic development and policy matters bodes well for our efforts to continue to move Detroit forward," said Anthony F. Earley, chairman of the Detroit Renaissance board of directors and CEO of DTE Energy.
"Detroit Renaissance has an outstanding reputation as an organization that develops partnerships with public and private stakeholders to enhance economic development and affect change," Rothwell said. "I look forward to continuing my involvement in those arenas."
