The $1.4-billion EB Games-GameStop merger will create a specialty retail giant in the video game sector, with 4,000 stores worldwide. Executives at the two companies expect the deal to close in early October.
During its Q2, the company bought a 138-store chain in Spain called Jump Ordenadores S.L.U. Electronics Boutique also entered the Switzerland market by acquiring PC-Joy AG, a nine-store electronics chain based in Zurich.
With acquisitions and openings, Electronics Boutique added 227 stores to its portfolio, bringing its total number of units to 2,280, compared to 1,733 a year ago. Same-store sales increased 2.6%, due to strong sales of the Sony PSP portable video game system as well as video game software.
During its Q2, Electronics Boutique's total revenue increased 23.9% to $448.3 million. For the first six months of the year, revenues rose 30.1% to $955.4 million.
