WSU president Irvin Reid says he wants to add a $26 million engineering development center to WSU's Detroit campus in the next five years. Reid said he could envision the research center working on everything from cancer diagnosis and treatment to detection of environmental hazards. "Our laboratories are equipped to build the research equipment we need on campus," Reid says.
He adds, however, that more room is needed. The projects are designed to accommodate a student body that is expected to grow through the remainder of this decade. Just last week, the university opened its third new residence hall in the past four years--the only residence halls in the history of the institution. Also planned, according to Reid, are a new business school and a medical education center at Wayne State's medical school at the Detroit Medical Center.
