Four areas will comprise Otay Ranch: Garden Court, a mix of traditional retailers; Center Court, a site with eateries, fashion-oriented stores and open space; Entertainment Court, to be anchored by a 12-screen AMC theater; and Lifestyle Row, a collection of upscale tenants.

General Growth executives plan to open the center in October of next year. Other than the AMC, they say a bookstore and a sporting goods retailer will anchor the project.

General Growth and other developers are currently building less enclosed malls and are concentrating more on the construction of open-air centers. Among the projects the company has under construction are the 980,00-sf Pinnacle Hills Promenade, in Rogers, AR; the one-million-sf Shops at Fallen Timbers, in Maumee, OH; and the 1.6 million-sf Circle T, in Westlake, TX.

In two weeks, General Growth will open the Shops at La Catera, a 1.3 million-sf mixed-use project in San Antonio. Dillard's, Foley's, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom are the anchors that will open as part of the project's first phase.
