SEATTLE-Cushman & Wakefield of Washington Inc. this month launched its first retail initiative in 15 years with the hiring of retail specialist Susie Detmer as senior director. The company has always had a retail component, but this is the first time since 1990 that the firm has had a dedicated retail broker, let alone two. In addition to Detmer, C&W hired her partner Stacy Reid, who will start out as an associate broker.

Detmer comes to the firm from CB Richard Ellis, where she worked as VP of Retail Properties and was responsible for securing and leasing retail sites for various clients such as American Eagle Outfitters, Chipotle Mexican Grill, TGI Friday's and Peet's Coffee. Detmer also provided leasing and sales transactional services to various owners such as Security Properties, Seattle Housing Authority, the Fairmont Hotel and the Vander Hoek Corp. Prior to that, Detmer served a VP with Garden Botanika in Redmond, WA, where she was responsible for more than $100 million in sales. She's been in brokerage since 1999.

"We're going to build a team around her as she expands the business," John Miller, senior managing director of Cushman & Wakefield of Washington, tells GlobeSt.com. "She will have significant input on who we bring in."

That, says Detmer, is a big part of why she made the move. "When I joined CBRE, there was only one other person there in retail and now there are 10," she tells GlobeSt.com. "It's fun to be part of building a new division and to be able to build it here at C&W is very exciting."

Miller says he is starting the retail division to take advantage of expected growth in the local retail market and support C&W's national goals.

"The retail side is about a $20-million market for C&W and we want to grow that to $100 million," he tells GlobeSt.com. "We have great teams in San Francisco and New York, and Susie will help elevate C&W nationally from Seattle."
