VANCOUVER, WA-The publisher of the Columbian daily newspaper here is preparing to develop a six-story, 118,000-sf Downtown office building here, most of which will house the non-production side of his newspaper business. The building site is on the south side of Esther Short Park. A pre-planning conference will occur sometime in the next 30 days for the estimated $30-million endeavor en route to a spring construction start and a mid-2007 completion.

Publisher Scott Campbell tells GlobeSt.com that the newspaper’s 360 employees are currently housed in an older building about one block away at 701 W. Eighth St. The building started out as a 23,000-sf structure and over the past 50 years has been expanded to an inefficient 118,000 sf. “It’s mostly tacked-onto-the-backside type space,” he says. “The ad department is in three different rooms and the circulation department is in six different rooms.”

When the new building is complete, Campbell says newspaper operations will occupy about 60,000 sf on floors one through four, while the production department will stay behind in about 50,000 sf. The top two floors of the new building initially will be made available for lease but eventually will probably be taken over by the newspaper, Campbell says.
