Construction Under Way on $170M Hospital

LOS ANGELES-McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. begins laying the foundation for Huntington Memorial Hospital's new 237,734-sf West Tower. The project counts seven stories and is set for a 2008 completion date.

LOS ANGELES-A seven-story tower is currently under construction at Huntington Memorial Hospital. The building, known as the West Tower, will consist of 237,734 sf and will cost $170 million. The West Tower will add 128 private patient care rooms to the hospital. The new rooms will be able to convert to intensive care units when necessary. The West Tower will house most of the hospital’s services, including food preparation, a pharmacy and an expanded laboratory. Steven C. Mynsberge, senior vice president and director of healthcare services for McCarthy, tells Globest.com that the rebuilding effort is in response to Senate Bill 1953, which requires that medical centers have updated facilities. Other projects include a possible expansion of the emergency services department.Huntington Memorial Hospital is located at 100 West California Blvd in Pasadena. Completion for the West Tower is expected for a 2008 completion date. Pasadena-based HDR is serving as the architect for the project.The West Tower is the fourth project McCarthy has completed for Huntington Memorial. Other major projects include: Phase 2, a 125,000-sf, four-story vertical patient tower expansion and heliport completed in November 1998; the remodel and renovation of the 53,500-sf blood donor center, psychiatric facility and sleep lab completed in October 1992; and Phase 1 and 1A, a 165,000-sf replacement hospital and 750-space parking garage, completed in December 1990. McCarthy Building Cos. has completed nearly $1 billion in healthcare work for the healthcare institutions in Southern California. In addition to Newport Beach, McCarthy has offices in San Francisco and Sacramento, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Dallas, St. Louis, Detroit and Atlanta.
