Executive Watch

Perspective

Jonathan A. Schein - President & CEO - Real Estate Media - GlobeSt.com10/18/05: Which recent news story will have the biggest impact on our country? The devestating earthquake in Pakistan? The next Supreme Court justice? Autoparts manufacturer Delphi filing for bankruptcy protection? Actually, each of these stories carries incredible weight and will impact our lives in both the short and long term. However, the biggest—and most under-reported–story of last week was the launch of China’s second manned space flight. Think about it. The world’s largest country, with a fast-growing economy, is now well into developing its space program. This should be a serious wake-up call if we are to maintain our position as the world’s economic and democratic engine. The far-reaching consequences may not be felt immediately, but rest assured, if we do not get our technological brainpower moving in the right direction, our 25-year-old space shuttles will start to look as outdated as our airlines. Be warned: The rest of the world is catching up with us and in some ways surpassing us.
