FREDERICK, MD-Gaithersburg-based MedImmune Inc. will build a 331,000-sf facility here as part of a four-phase development endeavor. Construction of the new building will cost an estimated $250 million.

The pharmaceutical company's manufacturing center is located at 660 Research Dr., right off Interstate 70 and Interstate 270 in Frederick County. Phase I of the expansion will include office and laboratory space in addition to manufacturing areas for the production of various drugs. The remaining three phases will include the addition of 379,000 sf.

"This expansion, which is targeted to bring more than 800 highly skilled jobs to Frederick and Montgomery counties, is also a testament to the depth of our technical and professional workforce, supportive business environment and world-class public and private sector research centers," Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. says. Various local, county and state organizations in Maryland competed with other MedImmune sites--the company has operations in California and Pennsylvania, and abroad--to bring the expansion project here. As part of its newly announced $105-million road project, the Maryland Department of Transportation will make infrastructural changes; a segment of which will pave the way to the MedImmune location.
