MCCONNELLSBURG, PA-JLG Industries Inc., a major producer of access equipment and highway-speed telescopic hydraulic excavators, will re-open its 130,000-sf manufacturing facility at Sunnyside Road in Bedford. The company also plans to construct a new 35,000-sf research and development facility at its headquarters here as well as a $1.8-million expansion at its Shippensburg facility. All three projects will be aided by $4.8 million in subsidies from the state.

JLG will invest $2.1 million to re-open the Sunnyside Road facility, which has been closed since 2003, and consolidate the manufacturing, sales, marketing, engineering and administrative functions of its Commercial Solutions Group there." These investments in additional capacity and the associated reconfigurations at our existing facilities will increase our overall manufacturing capacity, further optimize our facility utilization and position us to more effectively satisfy rising customer demand," says Bill Lasky, chairman, president and CEO with JLG.

Pennsylvania's Department of Community and Economic Development and Governor's Action Team offered JLG a financial package including $2.25 million through the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority, an $800,000 Opportunity Grant, $250,000 in Job Training Assistance and $1.48 million in Job Creation Tax Credits. The company is also eligible to apply for a $10-million loan through the Citizens Bank Job Bank program.

In a statement, Gov. Edward G. Rendell says the company's decision to expand here "sends a strong message to firms in other states that Pennsylvania is the place to do business, both for them and their employees." The projects are expected to create and retain more than 3,000 jobs in Bedford, Fulton and Cumberland counties within three years. Additional JLG manufacturing facilities are located in Belgium and France, with sales and the company has service operations on six continents.
