Federated is cutting thousands of jobs, closing 83 duplicate locations and converting most of May Co's regional chains (including Meier & Frank) to the Macy's brand. As part of the plan, May Co.'s Lord & Taylor Division will be sold before the end of the year, as will its 720-store bridal and formalwear division.

The closing of the distribution centers is also to reduce duplication, according to Federated. In addition to the Milwaukie facility, Federated distribution centers will be closed in Machester, CT; Baltimore; Aurora, CO; and Salt Lake City.

The Portland, Aurora and Salt Lake City facilities will close in August. The Manchester and Baltimore distribution centers will close in June. The company says it will seek opportunities to offer affected employees transfers to other Federated facilities.

Federated will retain 26 distribution centers around the nation. "Advances in logistics and distribution center technology allow us to handle a larger volume of goods more effectively with fewer facilities that are more regional in nature," says Federated vice chair Tom Cole.
