The mansion was designed and owned by Prince Roland Bonaparte, grand nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. The property address is 10 d'Iena, which is next to the Iena metro station and set amidst a mix of residences, businesses, museums and embassies in Paris' 16th arrondissement. The Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysées and Arc de Triomphe all are within walking distance.

The cost of renovating the property is "still being determined," says the source. When complete, it will be Paris' first luxury hotel fully owned and operated by an Asian hotel group.

Shangri-La officials say the historic and architectural integrity of the building exterior will be maintained. Interiors will feature the original grand staircase, fireplaces, parquet and marble flooring, 23-foot-high doorways and ceilings, chandeliers, mirrors, ceiling frescoes, gold-leaf accents and molding enhanced with the Bonaparte insignia. Historic paintings and statuary also will remain focal points.

The hotel rooms will range in size from 430 sf to 1,720 sf and some will include private balconies. The two restaurants to be included in the development will include a fine Chinese restaurant. A rooftop terrace will allow unblocked views of the Eiffel Tower and river. Meeting facilities will include a Grand and Petit Salon and Salon Bleu Boardroom, with a combined balcony overlooking Place d'Iena. Also included will be an indoor swimming pool, health club, retail space and business lounge.

Shangri-La Hotels chief executive Giovanni Angelini says the acquisition is "the culmination of a long search to find the perfect location to launch Shangri-La in France." Shangri-La Hotel-Paris will be joined by the group's second European hotel in 2010 with the opening of Shangri-La Hotel in the 1,016-foot-high, Renzo Piano-designed London Bridge Tower, which is projected to be the tallest building in Europe.

Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts currently manages 47 hotels under the five-star Shangri-La and four-star Traders brands, with a rooms inventory of over 23,000. The group has over 40 projects under development in Canada, mainland China, India, Macau, Malaysia, Maldives, Oman, Philippines, Qatar, Seychelles, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the US.
