LONG ISLAND CITY, NY-Silvercup Studios West, which will include office, residential, production facilities, studios and cultural amenities, is moving its way through the city's public review process. The 2.6-million-sf, approximately $1-billion plan calls for the development of eight new soundstages, other production and studio support space as well as residential apartments, commercial office space and a home for a cultural institution.

The new project is to be built on a six-acre waterfront site just south of the Queensboro Bridge and six blocks west of Silvercup Studios' main facility. It is now undergoing the city's seven-month public Uniform Land Use Review Process. The plan calls for 1,000 residential units, approximately 665,000 sf for office and retail, a 100,000-sf cultural institution and a 40,000-sf catering hall.

As previously reported by GlobeSt.com, in 2003, London's Lord Richard Rogers and the New York office of NBBJ were selected to design the development. At that time, Guy Geier, principal at NBBJ, said Silvercup had a need for additional studio space, but was interested in attracting cultural institutions, residential and some retail to create an active waterfront.
