CHICAGO-The long-feared name change at a Downtown landmark will occur this summer, executives with Federated Department Stores Inc. say. The venerable Marshall Field's at 111 N. State St. will become "Macy's at State Street."

Holiday window displays will continue on State Street and 45-foot tree will still be found inside, Federated officials promise. However, the Macy's signs will go up this summer. Meanwhile, the latest owner of the landmark building and Marshall Field's label plans a four-year renovation program, aimed at upgrading both the interior and exterior of the 99-year-old, 1.6-million-sf retail property.

The store also will capitalize on an alternate address on the north side of the building, 28 E. Washington St., where it will open the 28 Shop with a private elevator and doorman. The concept harkens back to the 1940s, when Marshall Field's customers made appointments to shop at the store.

"We're bringing together what our customers know and love about Marshall Field's with the best of Macy's," says Macy's North regional vice president Ralph Hughes.
