The chairman and CEO of Loew's Hotels and co-chairman of the board and office of the president, Loews Corp., said immigration legislation and attracting international tourism are two key issues affecting the industry right now. "There have been countless meetings with policy makers. Cabinet officers are listening to us. We need to have a free flow of commerce and to help diminish the view of fortress America."
Charles A. Ledsinger Jr., president and chief executive officer, Choice Hotels International Inc. agreed that immigration is a hot-button issue for the hotel industry. "Labor is a big issue for us."
Tisch also lobbied for the establishment of a presidential advisory council on travel and tourism. "We have to keep our voice strong in DC. We're a $1.3-trillion industry." He also said there needs to be a push to promote tourism abroad. "We cannot afford to ignore the numbers." `He noted that the US government spends a small amount compared to other countries to promote tourism. "Our industries vitality depends on sustaining a balance and finding opportunities."
