The complex, called the JunglePlex, is set to open in December at 8 Natalie Way in Plymouth on the same parcel of land where the Plymouth Sports Dome was located when it collapsed under the weight of a heavy snow in January, 2005. No one was injured in the collapse but the property, located off Long Pond Road, has been closed to the public since that incident.
Kosta Havales, a partner with Plymouth Adventure Park LLC, which is developing the site, said construction on the project began last week, shortly after Plymouth Adventure Park purchased the former dome site for $3 million.
Plans for the 67,000-sf project call for the creation of three turf fields for indoor soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and other sports, along with a children's learning and activity center, an arcade, café, martial arts training space and four birthday party rooms, all with a rainforest jungle theme. A second phase comprised of a family entertainment complex is expected to get underway next year, Havales says.
Havales says he is currently in discussions with a number of sports organizations and expects the facility will be able to host as many as 450 teams from the South Shore and Cape Cod. The facility also will be equipped to handle trade shows, business expos, conventions and corporate functions, he notes.
The complex, designed by Bill Fornaciari, with Fornaciari & Noseworthy Architects Inc., of Plymouth, will be steel beam construction to ensure that it can handle New England's heavy winter snowstorms, Havales says. Innovative Building Solutions, of Plymouth, will oversee the project's construction.
