"What I thought was going to be a negative has turned out to be a real positive," Gatski says. "I've used the rebranding campaign as a reason to really market the company and take it to the next level."
Gatski (CPM, CCIM), has been affiliated with Equus Management Corporation since 1993 and has owned the company since 1999. "Here I am chugging along for 13 years and they [Equis Corp.] decide to put up a bit of a stink," says Gatski. "They have a federal trademark that predates Equus by a year and a half."
My attorney said I had a good argument but then I learned of another company in Southern California with the same name," Gatski says. "At the end of the day I decided I didn't want to be confused with any of them."
The new name was suggested by Gatski's attorney, who advised that by putting the owner's name in the title it told clients new and old that nothing has changed but the name, that the same leadership is in place. Gatski says the rest of the name better represents the company's breadth of service than the prior name, which harkens back to its roots as a property management company only.
While property management continues to be the company's biggest egg – it just recently topped 3 million sf under management – the 32-person company also provides leasing and investment brokerage and in-house building maintenance and landscaping services. The company remains headquartered at 3400 West Desert Inn Road in Las Vegas.
"We've built strong relationships with clients," Gatski says. "We get our foot in the door with our property management work and that has spun over to the brokerage side of things."
